70's sophisticated glamour

Vintage, don't we just love it. Having that unique era old piece in our wardrobe which is completely different to any other piece on the high street in the sense it has its own life and you properly wont find another exactly like it . Being that bit different from everyone else. Say a piece form the 40s, that low knee length A-lined dress, just image 70 years ago a woman was wearing that dress! In vintage we all want that sleekest, sexiest, stylish piece we can find and claim it as our own. Over the past few years we enjoyed the reinterpretation of the 20s and 30s and the 80s being reborn and fading away again and now in 2011 its the 70s turn.

So what was stylish back then in the 70s? :
  • Hot pants- basically very short shorts
  • Platform shoes- similar to heels except they had a more chunkier appearance and it was common for them to range form 4 to 7 inch in height (wow)
  • Clogs- traditionally made from wood, are quite chunky, have an open back and look similar to sandals
  • Mini skirts- commonly had a hemline of 6-7 inches above the knee but skirts with a hemline of 2-3 inches above the knee fell into the mini skirt category as well
  • Micro skirt- expose all the knee and almost all the thigh, they are immensely short and in extreme cases only fall an inch or two below the groin area
  • Flared jeans
  • Bell bottoms
  • Trouser suit- trousers with a matching or coordinating jacket or coat
Mini skirts were everywhere in the late 60s/ early 70s

Their are two main variations of the 70s look, the 70s Boho look and 70s sophisticated.

The 70s sophisticated look:

The key to pulling off a look like this is an underlying confidence. Even a more reserved look need to be worn with an vibe of sexuality and independence disregardful. You need to carry an thoughtless air boldness. In the day when your wearing that floppy felt hat, those exotic jewels, that super-high pair of platforms you need to carry a hint of this aura so the sophisticated manner can be carried off effortlessly. For night think of the 70s Icon Bianca Jagger at studio 54 in a silk ivory gown, where for night that hint of sexuality and independence from the day has turned into a statement.

70's sophisticated by day:
By day it's all about clean yet voluminous silhouettes, and earthy '70s colour palettes. Look for:
  • High waisted wide-leg pants or flares that is smartly belted in.
  • Neat bow-blouses, especially ones with billowing or bishop sleeves. Particularly great fabrics are silk and satin.
  • Roll neck sweaters tucked into pants or skirts.
  • For those of you who are daring enough, a pair of hot pants are the ultimate '70s item.
  • A smart printed jumpsuit is another great alternative.

70's sophisticated by night:
By night with look-at-me shimmering fabrics and cuts that either tightly hug or sensually drape over the body the '70s sophisticate turns into the ultimate elegant socialite.
  • Add a ruffled neckline under a brocade blazer or tuxedo jacket and paired it with a sharp pair of pants.
  • Long, slinky gowns with draping, low necklines or dress slits are the ultimate in '70s night time glamour.
  • For that 70's disco-inspired edge choose high sheen fabrics like silk, lurex or anything metallic

Accessorizing the 70's sophisticated look:
accessorizing is the key to creating this 70's look, here are some tips to keep in mind

  • The right handbag completes a look. Try for smart, simple, high quality bags like a leather satchel for day, and a small bag with a long strap  or a clutch for night.
Mulberry £664

  • Big, statement leather belts add impact  to a seventies-inspired outfit. Put it around the waist of a maxi dress to draw in the material or simply highlight the waist.
Topshop £25
  • A pair of  thigh high boots, pair them with hot pants or a skirt for a decidedly sexed-up yet sophisticated '70s look.
Diesel £220
  • Wear lots of jewelery - however to much will make it look more of a bohemian style therefore keep it clean. Try lots of rings with bold stones (turquoise was big in the 70s), neat piles of bangles, pearl drop earrings, long pendant necklaces and strings of beads or pearls.
River Island £9.99
Topshop £10

  •  And finally the hair, ether go for a bob that flickers out at the bottom, think of Farrah Fawcett or a sleek short bob like Liza Minnelli. On the other hand you could go for that long haired look like Ali MacGraw which her long straight dark gloss hair that was usually parted in the middle. The iconic wavy hippy hair look is always an option however this will mostly suit a more bohemian style better.
